Daughter: I'm not going to try to play the piano anymore. I always make so many mistakes.

Dad: Don't give up. Practice makes perfect.

A very simple dialogue between parent and child, which instils a reason 'why' we insist our children practice, practice, practice!! It's a catch-cry we often hear in relation to sport – and its one we must ensure our children never tire of.

With New Zealand poised to play host to the Rugby World Cup, it seems timely to explore the role of sport and the valuable life lessons it offers.

With the right coach, who teaches good sports ethics, safety and uses best practices, children can gain so much from their participation in sports. In addition to the enormous health benefits that healthy and active life-styles promote, there is the benefit of developing good self-esteem through the setting & reaching of goals. Learning about ups and downs, challenges, adversities and what it takes to meet them head on are all valuable life lessons that can be learned through sport.

When parents and coaches set good examples, team sports do more for kids than teach them the rules of the game and get them in shape. Playing on a team is one of the best ways for children to learn about responsibility, respect, fairness and sportsmanship.

The world's most respected coaches have a shared belief … in discipline and the desire for their athletes to respect themselves and others. Great coaches expect the lessons they teach in the sports arena to apply to life.

American Football coach, Vince Lombardi is world famous for his perceptive quotes. He saw clearly how tips for success in sport are relevant to life in general: "Football is a great deal like life in that it teaches that work, sacrifice, perseverance, competitive drive, selflessness and respect for authority is the price that each and every one of us must pay to achieve any goal that is worthwhile."
